Matthews Commissioner
Hi, I’m Kerry Lamson, and Matthews has been our home for the past 15 years. My wife Jeannie and I have been married for 46 years, and like many of you, we chose this town for its charm, strong community, and quality of life.
I’m honored to now serve as one of your Matthews Town Commissioners. Over the years, I’ve grown deeply invested in our town—not just as a resident, but as a neighbor who believes we all have a part to play in shaping Matthews’ future. That belief will continue to guide my work on the board.
Community Service
Serving Matthews isn’t new to me—it’s who I am. I’ve been involved in several town boards and committees, always with a community-first mindset:
- Matthews Planning Board (Vice Chair) – guiding responsible growth and development
- Affordable Housing Committee (Chair) – addressing housing needs for families, seniors, and essential workers
- Matthews Housing Alliance (Founding Member) – supporting workforce and senior housing
- Matthews Silver Line Task Force – recommending transit routes connecting neighborhoods
- HOA Board and Treasurer – managing local finances and keeping dues affordable
These experiences reflect how I listen, collaborate, and work hard to deliver real results.
Early Priorities
Now that I will be serving on the Board, my focus is on translating campaign commitments into action for all residents. Some of the first priorities include;
- Rebuilding Trust and Teamwork – Strengthen collaboration within the board and with the community through open discussion, respectful disagreement, and a shared commitment to serving Matthews—not individual interests.
- Responsible Growth and Redevelopment – Support development that preserves the town’s character and existing neighborhoods, revitalizes aging corridors, does not strain our existing infrastructure and ensures housing remains affordable for families, seniors, and essential workers.
- Fiscal Accountability – With recent bond referendums, the new 1% county sales tax, and a $41M+ budget, we will focus on improving efficiency, reducing direct spending, and increasing transparency.
- Traffic and Mobility – Engage with NCDOT, the new Mecklenburg Transit Authority (MTA), Mecklenburg County, and neighboring towns to improve roads, plan for light rail transit, and bus routes. Locally, enhance traffic analysis for rezoning, implement smart signaling, improve crosswalk safety, expand sidewalks and bike lanes, set clear guidelines for e-bikes and scooters, and explore parking or shuttle solutions.
- Public Safety and Family-Friendly Amenities – Continue strong support for police, fire, parks, and recreation services to keep Matthews safe and welcoming.
- Environmental Stewardship – Make sustainability and green space protection central to all planning and development decisions.
